At the end of January 2009 my son was looking forward to the total
refurbishment of the flat he had just bought in North London. Having
been unoccupied for years it was a complete wreck having been the home
of an elderly academic who had died some years ago and for whose estate
probate had recently been obtained.
The main problems were
the kitchen and bathroom which had not been updated since the original
construction 75 years ago. Being the one responsible for getting the
work done I visited kitchen planners in the real and virtual world, had
the “designers” round to show their nice drawings or animations and was
concerned that no person or firm could offer me one individual who could
undertake and advise on the overall proposition and give me the
confidence to pay 100% in advance for a job the cost of which was a
large proportion of our total estimated outlay.
Then I discovered
“Fitted Kitchens Direct”. From a series of long phone calls and very
high quality computer graphics Ken was able to give me the assurance
that paying his non returnable visit/consultation fee was a worthwhile
investment. And thus it turned out to be. Corrections were made to
measurements, last minute additions to the spec were incorporated and
about three weeks later Ken and his son Graham descended on my son`s 577
sq ft to begin.
And then my problems
appeared…….not from the Johnsons but from my plumber`s realisation that
he was not competent to replumb the bathroom and from my decorators that
the plastering and tiling required was way beyond their abilities also.
Into that breech stepped Ken with his engineer`s background solving the
very difficult plumbing difficulties and Graham who was as good a
plasterer and tiler as he was a kitchen fitter.
In early April my son
began the move into his new first time buyer home.
The Johnsons
did not do my commissioned and extra jobs on the cheap. They did
them to an extraordinarily high standard for a very fair price. I did
not pay 100% up front. So confident were they of the finished article
they were quite happy to wait until after completion for the final
payment. I am a very hard person to please whether it be house
refurbishment…..this was my fifth…….or the quality of breakfast at a 5*
hotel.
Unhesitatingly I would suggest that before anybody agrees on any
building work involving any of the usual trades apart from the electrics
[my electrician did his job although I daresay if he too had let me
down…..] Ken and Graham be given an opportunity to offer their
expertise, their honest opinion, their good humour and of course their
estimate.
